SWMU 8 – Tow Way Fuel Farm Sludge Disposal Pits

This SWMU included unlined earthen pits adjacent to the TWFF fuel tanks. Sludges from the tanks were buried and covered with soil when the fuel tanks were periodically cleaned. This SWMU is part of OU 2, where benzene, lead and other hazardous constituents have been detected in groundwater above action levels and evidence of soil contamination has been described.

SWMU 8 has been combined with SWMU 7 (with EPA approval) since the SWMUs are next to each other and the contaminants are the same.
